Reap the Rewards of Gardening - A Perfect Lawn

Unfortunately, each lawn is different, different grass, different soil, different amounts of shade, different weather and so on. Therefore, there is no cure-all for lawns it is often trial and error related to your own situation.

There are however, some good practices to help in almost any lawn situation. Brown patchy grass is a never ending problem for homeowners it is usually found in a circle or horseshoe shape that spreads out for a small initial patch.

Brown spots in the grass are small but often meet up with other small patches to make larger areas of non-green grass. These areas may have to be treated with over the counter treatments or possibly even dug out and replaced with new grass.

Patches can also often occur if you have a dog. The PH in dog's urine plays havoc with the natural PH of the soil turning an area of grass brown and eventually dying off altogether. Encouraging the dog to move to different spots will give the soil chance to recover before killing the grass; alternatively, large amounts of water poured on the spot immediately after the dog has urinated will stop the grass from dieing.

Keeping up the lawn with new seeds each year in the spring is a good idea, especially if the lawn is starting to have an uneven or patchy appearance. Nitrogen-heavy fertilizers are also a must in the spring to ensure steady growth over the summer months.

During the summer, cutting the grass can be an annoyance to some, you can try experimenting with your watering regime, grass is a hardy weed, it can live in fairy extreme conditions, and all it needs is water and sun to flourish. Controlling the amount of water it receives will limit the pace at which it grows, but this is tricky and should be approached with great caution, but it is possible if the sun is not blazing down.

In the "wild' grass is cut short by grazing animals and aerated by their hooves or pecked at by birds. A healthy lawn can struggle to get air as the ground is covered by a carpet of grass that is often hardy disturbed. Lawn Aeration is very helpful especially after the end of the summer before the ground becomes semi-permanently hard during the winter.

During the winter, mowing should not be necessary and is probably best avoided as a sharp frost after mowing can cause serious damage. This is a good time to perform some lawn maintenance and service work on the mower to get it ready before the next growing season.
